What: Claverack History Day! invites families and community members for a day filled with enjoyment and learning,

When: Saturday, September 27, 2025, from 11 AM to 3 PM. There will be activities for all ages. A schedule of the activities will be made available on the website, please see below, and at each location the day of the event..

What and where: Here is what is in store. The Claverack Free Library will host an exhibition of historical art and photographs of points of interest throughout Claverack in the History Room. In the library’s first-floor meeting room an exhibition on the “The Jan Van Hoesen, Charles Marriott House” will include a film about this significant original Dutch Vernacular home. Members of the Jan Van Hoesen-Charles Marriott House Foundation will be on hand to provide fascinating history about the house. Representatives from the African American Archives of Columbia County, the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad, will share their knowledge about the Railroad and Claverack. Also at the library, appearing in period dress, co-author Elizabeth Barnes, will read from the children’s book, “A Free Woman on God’s Earth,” This book tells the story of Elizabeth “Mumbet” Freeman, an enslaved woman who was born in Claverack and was the first enslaved woman to win her freedom in court.

The Claverack Free Library grounds will find presentations and demonstrations on the history of the local sheriff’s department. Also on the library grounds, a food truck will serve delicious refreshments throughout the day.

The Reformed Dutch Church of Claverack, one of the town’s most significant historical properties that has been a place of gathering and learning through the ages, invites visitors to enjoy guided tours of the grounds, historic cemetery and the church’s stunning sanctuary, where all will be amazed by the history of our nation that resides right here in Claverack!

To conclude the day’s activities, all are invited to an organ recital at the church’s sanctuary. Renowned organist Keith Niver will present music of early America to the present day.The concert begins at 2 PM.

Why: Claverack History Day is sponsored by the Claverack Historical Society, in partnership with the Claverack Free Library, The Reformed Dutch Church of Claverack, The Van Hoesen-Marriott House Foundation, The African American Archives of Columbia County and Columbia County Sheriff. This is brought to you as an educational opportunity that celebrates Claverack’s rich history in the nation’s 250th year, and aims to establish a cherished townwide tradition for years to come.
